Poor Dental Health Linked to Brain Shrinkage, Aging

Gum disease and tooth loss may be linked to brain shrinkage, a new study has found. The shrinkage was specifically located in the hippocampus, which is a region of the brain involved in memory and Alzheimer’s disease.

The study involved 172 participants with an average age of 67 and no memory problems at baseline. Dental exams and memory tests were conducted at the beginning of the study, while brain scans were completed at baseline and again 4 years later.

Mild gum disease combined with tooth loss was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage than either alone. However, retaining teeth did not seem to slow brain shrinkage for those with severe gum disease.

“Our study found that these conditions may play a role in the health of the brain area that controls thinking and memory, giving people another reason to take better care of their teeth,” said Satoshi Yamaguchi, a study author.

Good Cardiorespiratory Fitness May Lower Colon, Lung Cancer Risk

Moderate to high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness may decrease the risk of developing colon or lung cancer, according to recent research. Good cardiorespiratory fitness was also associated with a decreased risk of dying from colon, lung, or prostate cancer.

This study was a large one that included data from 177,000 adult men. Data spanned an average of over 9 years per participant and included information like weight, lifestyle, and daily habits as well as cancer diagnoses or deaths. Cardiorespiratory fitness was determined through a standardized test.

Higher fitness levels were most significantly associated with a lower risk of death due to the cancers listed above. However, there were some limitations to the research, including the fact that only men were involved in the study.

Cardiorespiratory fitness refers to how well someone can perform moderate- to high-intensity exercises involving the heart, lungs, and large muscle groups. Exercises to improve this type of fitness include running, jumping, swimming, cycling, dancing, and boxing.

What if you could get a full cup of nutrient-packed vegetables just by eating a tasty bar?

Most people know how healthy whole fruits and vegetables are, but that doesn’t mean it's easy to fit them into your diet. After all, not everyone enjoys eating large bowls of kale everyday. Good Thinking Foods knows this, which is why they decided to make nutrition easier by creating their Good Thinking Bars. Each bar contains the equivalent of one whole cup of vegetables plus ½ cup of fruit and ⅙ cup of nuts. These bars— which come in three flavors— are also loaded with phytonutrients, like antioxidants and bioactive compounds, that support optimal brain function.

9 Little-Known Benefits of Vibration Therapy

If you’ve never heard of vibration therapy, you aren’t alone, but it’s actually a centuries-old technique that dates back at least to ancient Greece. Today, special “plates” are used to send tiny vibrations through your body, which have been shown to help improve bone density, burn fat, and improve circulation. Vibration plates can also help with muscle soreness after exercise, improve balance and flexibility, and even improve heart health. (More)

Green Tea Compound May Treat, Prevent Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They can be accompanied by symptoms like pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. The cause of these fibroids is unknown, making prevention difficult, but new research has shown that a compound in green tea known as EGCG could help. In a preliminary study, EGCG extract showed promise for reducing fibroid cell growth, suggesting it may help treat or prevent uterine fibroids. (More)

“Lifestyle Enrichment” Could Lower Dementia Risk

“Use it or lose it” may be a bit of a cliche, but it seems to hold true more times than not when it comes to healthy aging. In this case, taking part in brain-enriching activities— like learning to use a computer or taking some kind of educational class— has been linked to a reduced risk of dementia for older adults. Other mentally stimulating activities like playing cards or doing crosswords and puzzles also contributed to a lower dementia risk. (More)

HIIT Training Before Surgery May Significantly Improve Recovery

What you do before a surgery could well impact how smoothly your recovery goes. More specifically, a recent review found that completing a high intensity interval training (HITT) program before having major surgery reduced post-operative complications by 56% and also resulted in shorter hospital stays. The exercise programs lasted from 4-6 weeks prior to surgery, and the positive results held true for all types of major surgeries (including liver, lung, colorectal, etc.). (More)

Eat More of These 6 Foods to Lower Heart Disease Risk

Researchers have pinpointed 6 specific food groups that appear to be most critical for a healthy heart. It’s no surprise that fruits and vegetables headline the list, closely followed by legumes, nuts, and fish. Somewhat more surprising is the inclusion of whole-fat dairy products, although the researchers note that dairy (and fish) is most beneficial in moderate amounts. Unrefined whole grains also got an “honorable mention” as a good addition to a heart-healthy diet. (More)
